Rainbow Geodes

Updated: Oct 30

You know those activities that leave everyone happy?

In my house, THIS IS ONE OF THEM!

This artwork was voted “HONESTLY SO PERFECT!”, as we merged Nory’s love for rocks with Juliet’s favourite colour (rainbow). Turns out you can never have enough of either one

WHAT YOU NEED:

  • watercolour paper

  • black Sharpie

  • washable markers (rainbow colours)

  • paintbrush

  • cup with water

  • salt

HOW TO MAKE:

  1. Using a Sharpie marker, draw the outline of the geode. Do this by drawing your preferred shape, and then drawing smaller versions of it within the original shape.

  2. Outline the Sharpie markings with washable markers. A thicker line will give you more to “paint” with later on. We went in ROYGBIV order.

  3. Paint over the washable marker with water, filling any white spaces as you go along.

  4. Sprinkle your artwork with salt.

  5. Allow artwork to dry and then shake off any additional salt.

ACTIVITY EXTENSION:

  • Research geodes to find out more! (Where are they found? What are they made of? Etc.)

CONNECTION STARTERS:

  • What do you notice as you paint over the washable markers with water?

  • What do you notice when you sprinkle the salt?

  • Do you have any friends that would enjoy this activity?

  • What are some of your favourite memories involving rocks?

THINGS TO CELEBRATE & ENCOURAGE:

  • using permanent marker as instructed (HA!)

  • using salt as instructed (also…HA!)

  • sharing materials

  • replacing marker caps

  • helping to clean up

We hope your house finds this as crowd-pleasing as we did!

Happy connecting!

XOXO,

Lindsay
